Building Bridges at Westminster Palace

Ian Groves and his wife attended a meeting on Tuesday 18th November 2008 in the Palace of Westminster, organised by the All-Party Pharmacy Group.

The meeting brought together pharmacists from across the UK who had taken part in the Building Bridges campaign.

Eighteen grass-roots pharmacists shared their experiences of meeting with their local MP. Many of the pharmacists took this opportunity to raise their concerns in relation to healthcare and to highlight the essential services pharmacists provide to the local community.

The All-Party Pharmacy Group aims to raise awareness of the profession of pharmacy, and to promote pharmacists' current and potential contribution to the health of the nation. It has a membership of more than 120 MPs and peers.

Building Bridges Campaign

In September 2008, Groves Chemist met with the local MP for South Down, Eddie McGrady, as part of the Building Bridges campaign. This is an initiative launched by Chemist + Druggist, the weekly magazine for UK community pharmacists. The campaign aims to champion the role that pharmacists play in tackling local and national health issues facing the NHS to politicians.

Almost two million people a day in the UK visit a pharmacy and for many disadvantaged patients it is the only place where they can access healthcare. Since 2006, pharmacists have been given powers to prescribe medicines independently of GP's. Pharmacists are so much more than shopkeepers but a historical failure to lobby those in power means much of their potential goes unseen and unsupported.

The Building Bridges campaign has given pharmacists and the local people they serve a voice, engaging with politicians to underline the health issues that matter most to our local communities.
